  3. PEMBROKE BEAT PHOENIX AND THE RAIN TO STAY ON-TRACK FOR A SENIOR CUP TREBLE (9.6.2026)
9th June 2026 by Cricket Leinster

PEMBROKE BEAT PHOENIX AND THE RAIN TO STAY ON-TRACK FOR A SENIOR CUP TREBLE (9.6.2026)

Pembroke have beaten Phoenix this evening in their refixed Round One fixture (played as a T20) in the LHW Financial Planning Senior Cup. Having had two previous attempts to complete this game in the Phoenix Park both of which were abandoned due to adverse weather, this evening's clash switched to Sydney Parade and Pembroke made the most of home advantage.

With the game reduced to 16 overs per side as a result of persistent heavy showers throughout the afternoon, Pembroke won the toss, chose to bowl first and were immediately rewarded as Byron McDonough removed Johit Munjal and Raghav Grover in the first over.

Byron McDonough put Pembroke on the front foot with the ball

The in-form Shane Getkate followed shortly thereafter to leave Phoenix 20/3 in the 4th over.An unfortunate collision saw Aadil Naizam retire hurt just as further heavy rain returned necessitating a break in play.

When the players returned, the game had been reduced to 11 overs per side. Wickets then fell at regular intervals whilst Tyrone Kane held the innings together at the other end until he too perished for 21 to an excellent catch in the deep off Paul Lawson.

Ben White (31 not out off 16 balls) did a brilliant job in marshalling the tail with some lusty blows to give the Phoenix bowlers something to defend. With the DLS adjustment, Pembroke were set a target of 80 off 11 overs for a place in the Quarter-Final.

Tim Tector set the tone for the chase when he dispatched Sean McNicholl’s first ball into the gardens for a maximum. By the end of the first over, Pembroke had raced to 19/0, all to Tector.

Tim Tector once again excelled in the chase

Things got no better for Phoenix in the second over as Tector took another 14 off James Maginnis including a big six over extra cover.

McNicholl concluded his 3 overs from the St John’s End at a cost of 35 runs.

The spin twins Ben White and Amish Sidhu then came into the attack with Pembroke already within sight of victory which was duly completed by 10 wickets off just 7.4 overs on DLS.

This competition (which dates back to 1935) is sponsored by LHW Financial Planning which is led by Alan Lewis and Jack Tector - such is the nature of the local club cricket community that the Pembroke side is captained this year by none other than Jack Tector whilst the Phoenix side is coached/managed by Alan Lewis! No doubt Tector will be keeping a low profile in the office tomorrow!

Pembroke will now host Balbriggan in the Quarter-Final on Sunday 21st June as they continue their pursuit of a Senior Cup treble having won the 2024 competition defeating Phoenix and the 2025 competition overcoming Clontarf in the last two Senior Cup Finals, both at Sydney Parade.
