Cricket Leinster is delighted to announce that Nigel Jones has been appointed as Leinster Lightning Head Coach & Pathway Manager in succession to Albert Van Der Merwe who has recently started a new role as National Talent Pathway Manager with Cricket Ireland.
As part of this role, Nigel will have overall responsibility for the coaching and development of players and the Leinster Lightning senior men’s, Bolts and underage representative teams.
As a former Irish International and a highly experienced Level 3 Coach, Nigel brings a wealth of skills and knowledge to this expanded position with Leinster having previously worked in a number of senior performance-based roles with both Cricket Ireland and the Northern Cricket Union.
Nigel will be very familiar with many of the current Leinster Lightning and Leinster Bolts players in his capacity as an Underage Performance Coach with Cricket Ireland.
It is planned that Nigel will formally commence his new role with effect from the Interprovincial T20 Festival at Pembroke CC on 22 June having completed a hand-over process with Albert over the next couple of weeks.
Mark Jones, Chair of Cricket in Leinster, commented as follows – ‘Cricket Leinster would like to thank Albert Van Der Merwe for his unstinting and distinguished service over recent years and wish him well with his new role.
We are very enthused to have secured the services of Nigel Jones as our new Head Coach & Pathway Manager. Nigel will bring a new dimension to the expanded role and will be focused on sustaining and enhancing the Leinster Representative pathway and its role in developing future Irish Internationals.’
