Wednesday May 14th saw the second fixture in the U23 District Cup, as South Leinster got their campaign underway with a trip to College Park.
The 'Students' were buoyed by their opening night victory against North Leinster the previous week, and once again they won the toss and chose to bat first.
Before play began, both sides paused for a moment's silence in memory of Peter Prendergast, who sadly passed away the previous evening.
When the cricket got underway, Rory Betley set off like a train for the home side, striking 4 boundaries in his breezy 23, before being the third man out with the score on 43 inside five overs.
This saw Jamie Forbes and Ryan Smith coming together for the side representing Trinity College, with the pair adding 65 for the 4th wicket before Smith was dismissed by left-arm spinner Tom Johnson for a well-made 31, including two boundaries and two maximums.
He was, however playing second fiddle to Jamie Forbes, who also cleared the ropes twice, finding the boundary thrice more to guide the side to a decent final score of 158/8 in their 20 overs.
South Leinster started in a similar fashion, it was Hedayat Khogiani for them who went off flying, hitting four 4s and one six in his 25. An excellent opening spell from Jack Atkinson however kept the home side on top, as his four overs yielded a fine return of 2/16.
The chase never really got going from there, two wickets for each of David Vincent and Donncha Tucker, as well as one for Macdara Cosgrave seeing five in total fall to spinners, with only Mark Tonge's unbeaten 38 from just 27 balls managing to really threaten the total from a strike rate point of view.
South Leinster finished on 138, falling 20 runs short and giving Dublin University their second win of the season. The next game in the competition will see one of South or North Leinster get off the mark, as they face off in Railway Union next Wednesday at 5pm.
