CRICKET4ALL IN COUNTY LOUTH

Cricket Leinster is pleased to update on some exciting development plans in County Louth.

Partnering with Louth County Council, Cricket Leinster has been working on development plans with St. Oliver’s Community College to ensure the passionate young cricketers who are based at the Direct Provision centre at Mosney get full opportunities to play.

Such is the passion shown, St Oliver’s will be putting together an indoor competition to help engage the students further and join the number of schools participating in the Leinster Schools Cricket programmes, with matches being earmarked in May against both Ardgillan and Dundalk Grammar schools.

St. Oliver’s Community College Principal (John Halpin) was pleased to be expanding the college's role in engaging students in their chosen sport adding “We pride ourselves in creating a vibrant, student-cantered environment in which each student is supported to reach their potential, and delighted that will now include a greater engagement with cricket, to meet the clear rise in its popularity within our students”.

Stephen Brown (History & English) teacher at St Oliver’s has been delighted with the recent developments at the school adding “The enthusiasm for cricket from some of our students led us to explore providing an outlet for the sport as an extra-curricular activity. Both staff and students have been delighted with the immediate results. Cricket Leinster has been very supportive in getting the sport off of the ground here and the players are training hard in anticipation of becoming the first to represent the St. Oliver's Community College cricket team.”

Odhrán Doherty, Senior Sports Officer for Louth Local Sports Partnership added: ” the progress made in cricket provision based on a holistic, combined community-first approach from all partners is very exciting and we hope that this approach will result in sustainable structures for cricket for years to come in Louth and we look forward to the continued growth of cricket within the county in the future’’.
