Younger Players in the top four OC Divisions
It has proved a tough season for younger players in Division 1 this year. First of all there is the pressure to secure a regular place on the team. While in total 24 [U19] players have played at least one senior league match - only 10 could be said to be regulars, having played more than 50% of the matches to date.
Only two players have made over 100 runs [remember this is just the league and excludes Senior Cup, ISC and T20 matches], Jack Tector [145] of YMCA and Nathan Rooney [115] of North County. Nearly all of the latter’s runs came from a single innings of 95* - the highest for any U19 player. On the bowling front the top wicket taker is Tom Stanton [7] of Merrion, followed by Jack Rietschel [6] of Cork County and three players with five each - Josh Little and David Murphy [Pembroke] and Andrew Sheridan [N County].
The total number of youth players [U18 on the 1st Jan] is 18 with three players U15 - Josh Little and Sanil Gupta [Pembroke] and Harry Tector [YMCA].
In D2 the number of U19 players who competed so far this season is 26. Of these 24 are youth players [as defined above]. Three players have made over 100 runs headed by U15, Harry Tector [179] with an impressive average of 35. Stephen Doheny [152] has slightly fewer runs but an even better average of 50.67. The third player is Sam Murphy [115] with an average of 44. On the wickets front Harry Tector again stands out with 11 with an average of 16.91 and an economy rate of 3.77. Next jointly are Aviral Shukla [YMCA] and Rory Anders [Phoenix] on six wickets.
As one might expect the number of U19 and youth players increases as one goes down the Divisions. In D3 there are 35 U19 players, of whom 31 are youth players. Despite the numbers there are few stand out performances with only one player scoring over 100 runs so far this season - Adam Chester [107] for Phoenix at a healthy average of 35.67. In terms of wickets, Finn Conaty for Leinster is the only player to have made a big impression - 13 wickets at an average of 12.46. He is followed on the wicket taking front by Andrew Kavanagh [The Hills] who has taken seven and JJ Garth [Pembroke] who has taken six [and is also the youngest player in the league].
Finally, in D4 there were 33 U19 players, all but one of whom were youth players. A total of six players have scored more than 100 runs. The heaviest scorer is Jamie Grassi [169] of N County, followed closely by Rory McGovern [156] and Nathan Johns [143] from YMCA. The other three players are James Meier [YMCA], Ross Staunton [N County] and Nathan Rooney [N County]. Andrew Jackson [Railway] is well in front in the wickets taken stakes with 12, four others have seven a piece, Fionn Hand and Ross Staunton [N County] and Sam Streek and Harry Tector [YMCA].
