Terenure CC is delighted to announce that former Irish International Dave Langford-Smith ('Lanky') will be returning to Ireland and joining Terenure CC for the 2014 season.
Langford-Smith will further strengthen Terenure's squad as they look to compete effectively in Leinster Cricket Division One. He joins a rejuvenated Terenure who recently secured promotion for both their first and second teams in addition to winning the Leinster Under 19s Cup.
Prior to his return to Australia in 2011, Langford-Smith played for Phoenix over a 10-year period scoring 2,773 runs including two centuries at an average of 26.40. In his primary role as a bowler, he took 230 wickets at an average of 19.01 apiece.
In his 43 appearances for Ireland, he scored 321 runs at 17.83 and took 65 wickets at 27.14 and was a central figure in Ireland's success at the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007.
During his two recent seasons in Australia, Langford-Smith has been playing for Sawtell in the Coffs Harbour League which is a 1st Grade
Competition where he's taken 73 wickets at an average less than 10.
He also took 10-78 and scored 101 not out in a match last season which hasn’t been done before in the region. Not surprisingly, he won The 'Bill Rae Memorial CHDCA Best and Fairest' Award for his all-round performances last season.
Speaking about his impending return, Langford-Smith added - 'I'm delighted to be joining Terenure to help build on their success of last year and I look forward to playing and working with all the players within the club. My wife Maebh is from Rathfarnham, where we will live, so the decision to join a local ambitious club was an easy one. I'm very excited about Terenure CC's plans for the future and can't wait to touch down in sunny Dublin at the end of March.'
In his new role at Terenure, Langford-Smith will be working alongside his long-time friend and former team-mate Ted Williamson, who heads up Terenure's Coaching and Youth Academy Programmes. Terenure's Youth Section is enjoying a revival with under-age numbers up significantly in 2013 on the back of a comprehensive programme with local schools.
Ted Williamson (Terenure Head Coach) spoke briefly about Langford-Smith's impending arrival at Terenure - 'on behalf of everyone at Terenure, we're very much looking forward to Lanky's arrival. He'll be a massive asset to the club on many levels in addition to his proven match-winning capabilities. It's an exciting time for the club with ever improving performance, effective structures and increased participation'.
